Critical information
Before reading this article, I want you to know that the purpose of this post is not to confuse flexibility with being overloaded (or exploited), but rather to have the ability to adapt to changes and situations that arise in daily life.
Flexibility isn't weakness: it's survival
Being an inflexible person in a changing world is a huge problem. You can lose opportunities, and not only that, but you can also lose potential, money, and even... lose your job. Stay with me as I tell you how to lose money and destroy your professional career.
Being flexible is a great skill.
Being an inflexible person in a changing world is a huge problem: you can lose opportunities, stagnate professionally, and even lose your job. Stay with me, I’m going to tell you how money is lost and how careers are destroyed by not knowing how to adapt.
What is flexibility?
The word flexibility comes from Latin flexibilis, which means “capable of bending without breaking.” In the professional realm, it means adapting to new situations, changing your mind, adjusting behaviors. But careful: being flexible isn’t being lukewarm or letting yourself be manipulated. It’s rather having the intelligence to solve problems pragmatically. And if that brings personal or professional benefit, welcome it!
Is being flexible being selfish?
Yes. But not in a bad way. It’s understanding that in the job market, and especially in IT, no one is going to take care of your career like you do. Does it sound harsh? Yes, and very real too. We need to leave behind that corporate fantasy that “the company is your family” or that “they care about you as a person.” Companies take care of you until you stop serving them. Then, bye. No guilt, no astral chart or manifestation that’s worth it. Human resources, not humans with resources. In my case, after 7 years of working at a company, no leader ever gave me a farewell or thanks. That’s totally normal, and we can’t and shouldn’t let it affect us emotionally. The company isn’t your family, and it doesn’t owe you anything. And you don’t owe the company anything either.
Put yourself in the entrepreneur’s shoes (even if it hurts)
If I pay for a hammer, and the hammer performs like an electric screwdriver, am I going to complain? No. I gain more for less.
And that’s exactly what companies do with us, if we don’t know how much we’re worth. And we do it too. When we go shopping, do we choose the expensive product or the cheap one with good quality? The second one, obviously. So why do you expect companies not to do the same?
Being sentimental can cost you dearly
Many people, especially at the beginning of their career, feel part of the company, the “team,” the “family.” And that’s fine. But don’t fall in love with the company. Don’t wear the jersey like it’s the national team or your favorite club. I’m telling you from experience: the company isn’t a person. It doesn’t feel, it doesn’t love you, it doesn’t owe you anything. The people who helped you, yes. To them, thanks. But don’t confuse gratitude with eternal debt. And careful! Companies are there to generate and produce, it’s not something bad, it’s a characteristic or a feature.
Flexibility is also knowing when to leave
Being flexible isn’t always keeping your head down. It’s also knowing when to say “no,” when to ask for a raise, when to change jobs, and when to accept something new because it suits you, not because they force you. Flexibility is strategy, not submission.
The technical stuff comes later, and later it doesn’t matter
This isn’t a discussion about whether you do frontend or backend. Or if you like React or Angular. Or if you’re using an old library. All that matters, of course. But if you don’t have an adaptation mindset, you lose on all fronts.
I’m a dev. I like frontend. But they pay me to think, not to write code in a specific language. And with AI pushing harder and harder, that mental shift is urgent. If you don’t make it, we have bad news…
Do we think less with AI? Probably. So what?
Yes, AI makes us think less. Or at least it requires less cognitive effort from us. But this isn’t the first time this has happened. Did you know that Socrates said that writing was going to make us forget everything? That memory was going to be ruined because people would no longer think, they would just read.
Spoiler: he was right. And yet, today writing is a fundamental tool. AI is too. You just have to know how to use it without setting aside what makes us human: thinking, reasoning, being critical, and choosing. Conclusion: flexibility is adaptive intelligence
Flexibility, if it’s authentic, makes you stronger, not weaker. It allows you to adapt, change course, see opportunities. It’s not about betraying values, but about reviewing them in light of new realities.
Think of it like a poker game: you have to know when to fold, when to raise the bet, and when to change strategy. But never — BUT NEVER, EVER!! Seriously dear reader, never — out of love for the company. Always out of love for yourself. For your career. For your well-being. For your wallet.
If this text made you a bit uncomfortable, good. Because real change isn’t born from comfort, but from clashing with reality.
